Tips For Successful Interview – Lecturer Or Any NGO

Dear All I am sharing here some generic tips to prepare yourself for any interview. Please read all the points at least two times and act on these. These points are written in the scenario on Pakistan and also for any NGO / Multinational Company. There will be some other tips and time to time for your facilitation, so keep sending your questions, comments and tips. Your personal experience in this regard will be a learning lesson to all. These tips will also help you to impartially evaluate your performance in any interview or any other field of life.

A True Teacher always use his/her earlier learned things in new situation.  If you know how to ride a Bicycle then this knowledge will help you to easily ride a Motorcycle (in future  Car drive will not much problem to you). Interview = A meeting with an objective

Employer’s objective is to find the best person for the job

Employer: reviews candidate’s experience and abilities

  • Can you do the job?  (skills, abilities, qualifications)
  • Will you do the job?  (interest, attitude & motivation)
  • How will you fit into the organization? (personality)
  • You: impress the employer and assess position on offer
  • What does this position offer me?
  • How does it fit with my career plans?

You must prove that you are the most suitable candidate for this position (be normal and honest from inside out)

  • Anticipate questions and identify relevant examples

Dress appropriately

  • Aim to wear something appropriate and comfortable
  • Begins the minute you arrive
  • First impressions are very powerful
  • Allow time to relax

  • Smile and make eye contact
  • Be aware of own movements
  • Watch body language of interviewer

Competency-based Interviews

  • Company identifies key skills required for the job
  • Designs questions to get evidence of skills
  • Emphasis on past behavior as predictor of success
  • Identify the competencies required for job
  • Review job description or ask for information
  • Define each competency in behavioral terms
  • Identify past experience to illustrate how you demonstrated that behavior
  • Prepare examples for each competency
  • Practice talking about your experience
  • Try to give a complete answer

Responding to Competency Questions

Give me an example of a problem you encountered. How did you approach it.  What was the outcome?

STAR response

S: Describe the situation

T: Explain the task/problem that arose

R: What was the result or outcome?

What did you learn from this experience?

Examples of competency-based questions

Teamwork:

Describe a team project you  worked on.  What problems arose? How did you deal with them?

Communication Skills:

Describe a situation when you had to convince your supervisor of a unique idea.

Give an example of any reports you’ve written which illustrate your writing skills.

Interpersonal skills:

What kinds of people do you find it difficult to work with?  How do you handle them?

Examples of competency-based questions

Taking Responsibility:

Describe a time when you took responsibility to achieve a challenging goal.

Problem-solving:

Tell me about a time when you had several tasks to manage at one time with conflicting deadlines.

Conflict-resolution skills:

Tell us about a time when you got into a conflict with a colleague and how did you resolve it?

ADDITIONAL TIPS—Do’s

  • Prepare and practice your responses
  • Dress for success
  • Know the job location and arrive at least 10 mins early
  • Make good eye contact with your interviewer
  • Have high confidence and energy level, but don’t be overly aggressive.
  • Know your salary expectations
  • Ask questions in the end
  • Finish off by telling interviewer that you are very interested in working for the company

ADDITIONAL TIPS— Don’ts

  • Ask about salary or other benefits until after you’ve received an offer
  • Say anything negative about former employers or give out confidential information about their operations
  • Ever lie – answer questions truthfully and frankly
  • Be soft-spoken – project confidence in your voice
  • Go into too much detail about your personal issues
  • Answer cell phone calls during the interview
  • Answer questions with a simple “yes” or “no”
  • Let nervousness take control
  • Act as though you are desperate for employment

  • If you don’t get selected:
  • It is not the end of the world
  • Practice makes perfect
  • You can’t win if you don’t play
